HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Chiefs hand Lake Placid 1st golf loss

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid golf team’s Champlain Valley Athletic Conference unbeaten streak came to an end Thursday as Saranac Central downed the Blue Bombers 4-2.

Lake Placid also took on Plattsburgh during Thursday’s round at Craig Wood, winning that match 4-2.

The Blue Bombers are 7-1 on the season with two matches remaining — Friday at home against Northeastern Clinton and on the road Monday against undefeated Peru. Saranac’s only loss of the season came against Peru.

Lake Placid will attempt to defend its Section VII tournament championship Thursday on its home course.

Brendan Bullock secured the Blue Bombers’ lone outright victory against Saranac, shooting a 52 to beat Connor Recore who carded a 53 from the No. 4 position. Lake Placid’s Hunter Wilmot and Grady Draper each halved their matches to account for the Blue Bombers’ other point. Wilmot shot a 44 in the No. 1 position to tie Nik Hamel of Saranac, while Draper turned in a score of 56 from the No. 6 position.

Colin LaMora, of Saranac, also shot a 44, which was the low score of the day.

Lake Placid’s Jack Armstrong lost his match 47-46 against Alivia Watson in the No. 2 spot.

The Blue Bombers were simultaneously taking on Plattsburgh on Thursday. Wilmot, Armstrong, Bullock and Cole Jacques (56) were credited with wins in that matchup.

AuSable Valley 4, Saranac Lake 3

RAY BROOK — The AuSable Valley golf team beat Saranac Lake in a tiebreaker on Thursday at Saranac Lake Golf Club.

After both teams won three matches, the final result came from combining the top four individual scores from each team. The Patriots won the tiebreaker 210 strokes to 219 strokes.

AuSable Valley’s Jeffrey Miller was the medalist of the match, carding a 44 in the No. 1 spot to earn a win over Zach Churco. Carson Ryan (53), Noah Jewtraw (55) and Evan Hochwald (59) were credited with victories for the Red Storm. Will McClure had the low round of the day for Saranac Lake with a 52 in the No. 2 spot, but was beaten by Jack Thomas’ 49.

BASEBALL

Lake Placid 11, AuSable Valley 1

CLINTONVILLE — The Lake Placid baseball team combined a strong pitching effort with a late-game offensive rally Thursday in an 11-1 victory over AuSable Valley.

Blue Bombers pitcher Jake Coursen allowed a run in the bottom of the first and was lights out the rest of the way, finishing with 10 strikeouts while walking one and giving up three hits over six innings of work.

Jesse Izzo finished the job on the mound, striking out two without allowing a hit in the seventh inning.

The Blue Bombers scored four runs in the first and added seven in the sixth. Noah Marshall went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, Scott Sharlow went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Duncan Segger chipped in two RBI, two runs and a double.

Evan Snow had two of AuSable Valley’s three hits.

Northeastern Clinton 12, Saranac Lake 7

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake baseball team led most of the way Thursday, but let the game slip away in the top of the sixth inning in a 12-7 defeat.

The Red Storm built a 7-5 lead going into the top of the sixth, when Northeastern Clinton rallied with seven runs to take control of the game.

Jaden Gladd went 3-for-3 with a double and Ben Munn had two doubles to lead Saranac Lake offensively. Both teams collected 11 hits.
