Huskies 1-1 so far

LAKE PLACID — So far, the Northwood School junior team has a 1-1 record at the USA Hockey U18 Tier 1 National Championships being held in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

There are 16 teams competing in the tournament, with each squad playing three games in the opening round, which includes four different brackets. The top two teams in each bracket will advance to quarterfinal games taking place on Saturday.

The Huskies won their opening game 2-1 on Wednesday against Victory Honda, and then fell 5-1 Thursday to top-seeded Shattuck St. Mary’s. Northwood’s juniors play their third and final matchup of the opening round today against the Sioux Falls Power as they look to reach quarterfinal action

On Wednesday, Northwood gave up a shorthanded goal in the first period to fall into a 1-0 hole, and then rallied with a pair of goals in the third stanza to take down Victory Honda, the tournament’s eighth seed. Ninth-seeded Northwood deadlocked the contest 1 minute, 26 seconds into the third when Josh Waters scored on a power-play off an assist from Reid Leibold. The Huskies then took the lead for good when Will Arquiett buried the game-winner with 6:09 left in the third with Cody Monds assisting.

Northwood finished the game with a 40-26 advantage in shots on goal. Ryan Wilson recorded 25 saves to earn the win in nets.

A rocky second period doomed the Huskies on Thursday, as Shattuck St. Mary’s scored four times in the stanza on the way to the win. The teams played scoreless hockey in the opening period and then Shattuck scored four straight goals in the second to take a 4-0 edge, staring with a shorthanded tally at the 1:10 mark.

Trailing 4-0, Northwood cut the gap to three goals when Tommy Banister buried a puck with 2:34 remaining in the second. The goal came on a Huskies’ power play and was set up by Arquiett. Shattuck St. Mary’s then sealed the victory and improved to 2-0 by scoring the lone goal of the third period.

Shattuck St. Mary’s out shot Northwood 32-26. Wilson posted 27 saves in the loss.

Special teams play turned out to be a factor in the win, as the Sabres scored their one short-handed tally and buried two more pucks on power-play opportunities. Jackson Kunz powered the Sabres with two goals, and Dylan Schneider, Brendan Brisson and Artem Shlaine added a goal each in the win.

Northwood’s game today against Sioux Falls is slated to start at 5 p.m.
