ADK 80Kers go the distance

LAKE PLACID — There was a late fall glimmer to the grass early Sunday morning as about 50 mountain bikers pedaled around warming up at the biathlon course at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

The racers lined up in a field with bikes spread out before them on the ground, seemingly haphazard but all pointing toward the start line.

The racers took off, racing mostly themselves. Over the course of 20, 40 or 80 kilometers, the bike riders would be spreading out and spending more time alone than in a pack.

“Every year we come up for a week, and it just happened to be that we were lucky enough that this race was going to be when we were here,” Baltimore resident Alexis Rhode said. “We’re pretty avid cyclists back home. Our kids both race cyclocross, so we started racing the races with them.

“I called the race director and he said it would be fine to ride a cyclocross bike, and now I might be second-guessing that decision,” she said before the race. “But it’s the bike I brought so I’m riding it.”

The ADK 80K mountain bike race was the second event of the weekend, with a trail run taking place on Saturday at the same venue. Local trail runner Sarah Keyes won the women’s 50K with a time of 4 hours, 24 minutes and 17 seconds.

“I have been trying to do the race for a few years now and always something else was going on, so I was psyched to have the opportunity,” Keyes said. “I didn’t decide I was going to do it until like the day before, (but) I needed to get in a long training run anyway.”

Keyes is training for a 125-kilometer race in Canada in September, and spent a large portion of her summer out west, which culminated in her completing the 100-mile Western States Endurance Run in California.

“It’s more motivating to get up and do it as a race scenario,” she said. “It’s kind of like a catered long run with aid stations.”

Keyes bested the entire field of runners in the 50K, coming across the line more than a half hour before the men’s top finisher Eugene Klitenik (5:01:18).

Jared Lynch-Gilbert won the men’s 80K run on Saturday with a time of 6:54:13, while the lone runner in the women’s longer run, Luana Pesco Koplowitz, finished in 11:38:40.

Douglas Girling completed the ADK 80K ultra duathlon, the 40K bike and 40K run in a combined time of 6:24:50.

On the bike side, Andy Laird (2:15:12) had the fastest overall time in the 40K, while Jennifer Harvey (2:42:02) was the fastest woman. Jessica Nankman (5:05:10) was the fastest woman in the 80K and Patrick Carey (4:29:18) was first across the line for the men.
