Locals hold their own at Lake Placid Winter Carnival races

The Lake Placid and Saranac Lake alpine skiing teams held their own this week as the Lake Placid Winter Carnival held races at Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington and Mount Pisgah in Saranac Lake.

Andrew VanSlyke, of Lake Placid, took first place in Tuesday’s giant slalom boys race at Whiteface. He put down a first-run time of 42.11 seconds and followed with a 42.59 for a total time of 1:24.7. Saranac Lake skier Witter Swanson took second place with a two-run time of 1:27.0.

Lake Placid’s Gunnar Anthony took fifth in the giant slalom with a two-run time of 1:29.6. He was followed by Saranac Lake skiers Logan Purner (1:29.8), Andrew Fogarty (1:30.1) and Sully Fogarty 1:30.7. Silas Swanson placed 10th with a 1:31.6.

In the girls giant slalom race Tuesday, Ryley Fischer, of Saranac Lake, put together runs of 45.92 and 45.63 seconds for a total time of 1:31.6 to take third place. Alexis Hollister of Old Forge won the event with a two-run time of 1:29.1 and Reegan Domagala was second in 1:30.8. Aurelle Fogarty of Saranac Lake placed sixth in the event with a time of 1:35.9.

Fischer came back Wednesday with a second-place finish in the slalom race at Mount Pisgah. Fischer’s two-run time of 88.6 seconds trailed only Hollister, who totaled 84.4. Aurelle Fogarty placed fifth in the race with a time of 94.02 and Lake Placid senior Grace McGrew took 13th in 117.8.

Witter Swanson was the top local finisher in the slalom race at Mount Pisgah. He placed fifth with a two-run time of 83.88. Silas Swanson took seventh in the event with an 87.2.

Max Grahm won the slalom event with a 79.99 to beat Finn Woods (80.75). Both skiers are from Section III schools.

Nordic skiing

LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid boys and girls nordic ski teams took the top spots in team relays Thursday at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

Scott Schulz, James Flanigan and Jesse Izzo teamed up to win the boys race in 33 minutes, 50 seconds. Saranac Lake’s Lauchlan Cheney-Seymour, Jacob Alberga and Ethan Wood took second in 34:21.

Anya Morgan, Sara Rose-McCandlish and Marli Damp won the girls race in 43:56 to beat fellow Blue Bombers Grace McGrew, Lilly Flanigan and Bea Hollander who finished in 49:50.
