Chazy outlasts Blue Bombers
CHAZY – The Chazy girls soccer team saved all its scoring for overtime Tuesday in a 3-0 victory over Lake Placid in the Section VII, Class D semifinal round.
The teams were all even at 0-0 after 80 minutes of regulation and through the first 6:54 of overtime until Natalie Pombrio connected for the game’s first goal on a pass from Lily Hayes. The floodgates opened from there as Conner LaPierre scored at 8:09 and Pombrio tallied again before the whistle.
With the win, the Eagles advanced to the sectional championship game Saturday against Moriah, a 4-2 winner over Elizabethtown-Lewis/Westport on Tuesday.
Lake Placid’s defensive unit, led by goalkeeper Shelby Jewtraw, was able to fend off the relentless Chazy attack throughout regulation. Jewtraw, a junior, finished with 11 saves as Chazy held a decisive 16-5 shooting advantage.
The Blue Bombers advanced to Tuesday’s semifinal with a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory over Schroon Lake on Friday. Sophomore Meghan Byrne scored the game-winner in that game 16 seconds into the second 5-minute sudden death period.
Schroon Lake got on the board first Friday when Lily Slyman scored at 32:17 of the first half. Lake Placid answered early in the second half on a goal by Taylor Barney who cashed in on a pass from senior Grace McGrew.
The teams battled through two 10-minute overtime periods and one sudden death period before Byrne’s heroics in the second sudden death overtime. McGrew assisted on the game-winning goal.
Lake Placid and Schroon Lake each took 20 shots in the game. Jewtraw turned away six shots for the Blue Bombers.
