Lake Placid brings home trophy

MAYFIELD – The Lake Placid boys soccer team traveled to Mayfield for a tournament this weekend and came home bearing the trophy.

The Blue Bombers started the tournament Friday evening with a 2-1 win over Greenville. Lake Placid senior Kevin Geesler started off the scoring when he floated a header into the goal on an assist by Jarell Paul, but Greenville tied the score just seconds later on an unassisted goal by John Wagner.

Placid put away the winning goal minutes before the first half ended when Geesler crossed the ball to Bjorn Kroes who put it in the back of the net for the Bombers.

Placid advanced to the final with the win.

The host team destroyed Potsdam with a 6-0 win on Friday to earn its spot against Lake Placid in Saturday’s final.

Lake Placid dominated the championship game, besting Mayfield 5-0.

Geesler again scored for the Bombers after Blake Roy opened the scoring on an assist from Stuart Baird. Geesler sent an assist to Ryan Kane for the third score of the match. Kroes put Placid up 4-0 before the half, and Baird added to the total in the second half.

“What a weekend,” Lake Placid coach Stuart Hemsley said this morning. “To not concede a goal against a team that scored six the night before and then put five past them ourselves was nothing short of spectacular.

“It served perfectly for what could happen coming into the season.”

Lake Placid sent four players to the all-tournament team, with seniors Baird, Geesler, Kroes and goalie Kamm Cassidy representing the Bombers.

Starting at $19.00/week.
