Bombers’ season ends in semfinals

The Lake Placid Family Dental 16U softball team completed its summer season over the weekend by posting a 3-2 record at the Vermont Rockets Invitational in St. Albans, Vermont.

The team ended its 2016 season with a loss in the semifinal round of the tournament.

On Saturday, playing three games in temperatures approaching 95 degrees, Lake Placid went 2-1 in games against familiar foes.

They opened with a 4-3 extra-inning win over the St. Lawrence Thunder, a squad that beat them 5-2 in a game on July 20. Ellie Bowlen pitched a gem scattering seven hits and striking out nine batters. Danielle Dubay lead the offense with a pair of hits. Hannah Rondeau was named player of the game for her defensive play.

The Bombers next faced the Vermont Screaming Eagles, a team they tied in the Lake Placid Family Dental Invitational just a month ago. Brooke Myers struck out 10 batters to get the pitching win and also led the offense with three hits. Rylee Pierson, Shelby Jewtraw, Rondeau and Sydney Hunter also contributed one hit each in the come-from-behind walk off 7-6 victory. Brooke Myers was named player of the game.

In the final game of the day, the Vermont Xplosion again got the best of the Bombers who fell to them 10-2 just two weeks prior in the Bethlehem Blast Invitational. Lake Placid managed just five hits in the 10-4 loss Saturday. Rondeau had two hits while Dubay, Bowlen and Hunter each had one. Bowlen took the pitching loss but was named player of the game for her efforts.

In Sunday’s quarterfinal matchup, the Bombers rolled to a 12-0 victory over the Vermont Thunder. Bowlen got the pitching win after scattering four hits. There was plenty of offense in this one as Rondeau had three hits, Myers, Jewtraw, Dubay and Iris Gladd had two apiece, and Bowlen, Darrian Sweatt, Hunter and Gabby Dumas each had one hit.

The team ran into a very hot Adirondack White Lightning team in the semifinals and fell 13-0. Dubay led the offense with two hits while Jewtraw, Hunter and Gladd added one hit each.

The Bombers were comprised of girls from six different schools and included Shelby Jewtraw from Lake Placid, Iris Glinski from Saranac Lake, Brooke Myers from Franklin Academy, Rylee Pierson, Darrian Sweatt and Lilly Nolette from Willsboro, Danielle Dubay, Ellie Bowlen Hannah Rondeau, Kendra Christensen and Kennedy Barber from AuSable Valley and Gabby Dumas, Sydney Hunter and Kya McComb from Northeastern Clinton. Their record for the season was 9-10-3. They competed in four tournaments winning their home tournament.

Details will be forthcoming regarding fall tryouts for the 2017 16U (birth years 2000-2001) and 14U (birth years 2002-2003) teams that will be held in mid to late September and details regarding their winter training clinics.
