Working together is paramount in 2026

To the editor:

I am writing as a lifelong Saranac Lake native and as someone whose family has called this community home for generations. I feel compelled to speak up after watching recent board meetings and seeing what I believe to be a continued pattern of unproductive behavior that has gone on for far too long.

Saranac Lake was built on hard work, mutual respect and a strong sense of community pride. Growing up here gave many of us a sense of calm, belonging and responsibility toward one another. Unfortunately, the tone and conduct displayed during recent board meetings feel far removed from those values. The ongoing antics and personal conflicts do not seem to move us closer to solutions and instead distract from the real issues facing our village.

In particular, the level of disrespect I observed from trustee Aurora White during these meetings is deeply concerning and, in my opinion, completely uncalled for. Professional disagreement is one thing, but public conduct matters, especially when serving the community.

I spent three years working alongside Mayor Williams during my time employed by the village. While we did not always agree, Mayor Williams consistently treated me and my family with respect. I cannot say enough positive things about his leadership and character. In my view, if someone cannot work productively and respectfully with him, they may need to reflect on their own role in the conflict.

When I had the opportunity to move forward in my career, the behavior of certain board members, both past and present, made that decision easier than it should have been. That should concern all of us.

What Saranac Lake truly needs is cooperation, professionalism and a renewed focus on the issues that actually matter. We owe it to future generations to create a community where children can grow up with the same sense of pride and opportunity that so many of us were fortunate to experience, rather than one consumed by pettiness and division.

Lastly, for those who frequently speak about transparency, you are not exempt from this. Trust is earned through honesty and respect.

It is time to work together, move forward and remember why we all care so deeply about this place we call home.
