Sonnet: They have turned the Constitution upside down
To the editor:
They have turned our Constitution upside down.
This government of grifters, con men, clowns.
Cast off the rule of law and freedom drowns
And the men in masks come marching into town.
They have turned the lessons of our history inside out
Expunging what the Civil War was all about
False narratives that sew discord and doubt
And the men in masks march north and south.
They have turned the rule of law upon its head
Until our Bill of Rights is nearly dead.
They give us Project Twenty-Five instead
And along with men in masks march fear and dread.
How easily our framework is undone
When it turns out checks and balances are none
When Congress only cares about who won
When the men in masks come marching with their guns.
Six Justices fall prey to siren songs
Loathe to look at proof of Presidential wrongs
Too many too content to go along
And the men in masks march where they don’t belong.
In intemperate tweets and slurs Jim Crow rebounds
Again the demons from our past come round
A gilded home, the MAGA hat a crown
And the men in masks come marching into town.
