Blue at Christmas
To the editor:
It’s that time of year again. We are putting up the tree, shopping for special gifts, baking holiday treats and listening to favorite carols. Amid the seasonal rush, it’s important to remember that not everyone is merry as the Christmas and New Year holidays draw near. Grief, difficulties, illness, disability and loss can leave us feeling blue and disconnected from the joy and celebration of the season. Let’s be mindful of our hurting neighbors.
A “Longest Night” service, also known as a “Blue Christmas” service, is a time of Christian worship that offers hope, comfort and healing for all. This beautiful, reflective worship service includes music, prayer, scripture, quiet reflection and growing light. The service creates the space for difficult feelings to be acknowledged and honored.
There will be an ecumenical Service of the Longest Night on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 6 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Saranac Lake. People of all Christian traditions are welcome. A time of hospitality will follow the service in the Great Hall of the church. For further information, call 518-891-3401. Parking is available in the lot adjacent to the church.
