Inflation checks and food pantries
To the editor:
Several weeks ago, the Adirondack Daily Enterprise ran two stories, one on New York’s “inflation” checks and one on the looming cuts to SNAP benefits. SNAP provides essential food aid to families. Food insecurity is high in our region, and with the cuts to SNAP scheduled to go into effect on Nov. 1, many of our neighbors will go hungry this winter. The one-time inflation checks are a gesture by the governor to help offset rising costs. For many, though, these checks will have little impact. There is a way to make these checks have an impact on others, though.
If you are fortunate enough to get a check, and you are also fortunate enough to buy everything on your list when you go grocery shopping, I encourage you to donate the amount you received from the state to your local food pantry. Adirondack Health’s website has a complete list of area pantries: ahihealth.org/resource/food-pantries. Please help your neighbors as vital food aid is eliminated.
