Connors wrote book of local interest
To the editor:
The obituary for Bernard Connors should also have mentioned his book “Tailspin,” which detailed the life of Air Force Major Anthony Call. Major Call went AWOL from the Air Force because of his gambling debts and ended up in Lake Placid, where he raided houses and stole jewels from guests at the Lake Placid Club. When cornered in a home by Lake Placid village police, he shot three (one of whom later died) and escaped into the woods. This set off a summer-long manhunt that encompassed a much wider area for a longer time than the recent search for the inmates who escaped from Dannemora. It’s a great read for anyone, anywhere, especially if you know the terrain.
When he went AWOL, Call was stationed in Louisiana. He came to the Adirondacks by way of Chicago and Cleveland. As a good and experienced former FBI agent, Connors details the evidence that he pieced together to determine that it was Call and not Dr. Sam Shepard who murdered Shepard’s wife, Marilyn.
