Keep your speed wildlife friendly
To the editor:
Now here we are passing the halfway point in another summer. For me it’s a 70th summer. Never have another 70 will we!
It’s a good summerttme feeling. Just to step back from the pace of everything and spend a few precious moments alone with August. Just August and me …. “I love you, August!”
And one of the most lovable thngs about this time of year? It’s having all the young birds and wildlife out here enjoying August with us! It’s good to feel a feeling of welcoming all of these new living things into the world that we share. Then …. there’s another young raccoon lifeless out there on the center line. That makes three in my last two short drives from Colton into Potsdam and the young of the year are now here with us. This letter asking my fellow drivers to be wildlife friendly is something I feel compelled to write every summer. I catch myself driving faster. My speedometer swinging towards 50 …. 55. That’s when my spirit reminds me …. “watch out for the young of the year.”
If we could just keep our speeds to a wildlife friendly 45 mph limit, especially during the dawn and dusk hours of high wildlife activity, more of our fellow living things would live to enjoy August, September and many a summer to come.
