Why I no longer call myself a Christian
To the editor:
I’m a follower of Jesus — but I’ve stopped calling myself a Christian because too many Christ-followers in this country support a bigoted bully who enjoys putting others down. You can’t be against everything Christ taught and claim to be his follower or represent his values. You just can’t.
During his first Presidential campaign 10 years ago, I watched in horror as Donald mocked a disabled New York Times reporter in Myrtle Beach. I haven’t liked bullies since I was little. He lost my respect then, and hasn’t gotten it back with his hate and lies.
Trump frequently uses crass comments, crude insults, hateful, demeaning, malicious, vile, incendiary language in his speeches. He struggles to form concrete sentences. He lacks moral character and is a spoiled brat who had everything handed to him. What was NOT handed to him, he stole and managed to avoid the consequences.
He has boasted about sexually harassing women — on video. I see no compassion, warmth, sensitivity, self-awareness or humility in this man’s words and actions. He only cares about himself. He doesn’t care about others unless he can use them for his own gain.
It’s a sad day when our 45th President has broken almost every commandment, can’t quote a single Bible verse, was married 3 times, cheated on all of his wives, has had numerous extramarital affairs with porn stars, has no moral character, yet has a huge following among people who claim they voted for him because of Christian values.
He’s a pathological liar skilled in manipulating people. This lying reality TV conman stole millions from American taxpayers. His strategy: deflect, deny, hurl insults, spew hate. He conned hundreds of young people and their parents into paying to attend Trump University. He conned banks into lending him more money after he repeatedly failed to pay them. He conned contractors to work for him, then stiffed them. He convinced his evangelical fans that he’s been anointed by God to be President.
He said he would donate his salary, divest from his businesses, release his tax returns, that Mexico would pay for the wall, that as President he wouldn’t go on vacation or play golf, that he would appropriate money to Historically Black Colleges and Universities. He said no one on his campaign had any communications with Russian officials, that American steel would be used for the pipelines carrying oil, that he would defeat ISIS in 30 days. None of this is true.
He has 91 criminal charges against him, 26 assault allegations, 34 felony convictions and four indictments. He was found guilty of 34 felony charges for fraud. He claims to be a good businessman, yet he inherited millions and has gone bankrupt six times.
If someone cheats their customers, vendors or business partners, they’ll cheat you too. If they betray there spouse, they’ll betray you. If they lie nonstop, they’ll lie to you as well. “When the man who embodies all 7 deadly sins — sloth, lust, gluttony, greed, wrath, envy and pride is signing Bibles, it means it is time to re-evaluate your religion.” (from an article in the Huffington Post about Trump signing Bibles in Alabama).
I don’t understand how people can support hate, name calling, bullying in the name of Christ. It’s very anti-Christian and not something Jesus would do.
