Trump and Juneteenth
To the editor:
President Trump has recently issued proclamations commemorating Flag Day, the anniversary of Bunker Hill and Father’s Day, among others, but failed to mention Juneteenth this year. According to Clarence Page, writing in Tuesday’s Adirondack Daily Enterprise, perhaps it was because Biden made it an official holiday.
Or perhaps there’s another reason:
“… Until recently, the following message could be read on the Army’s official website, Army.mil: Juneteenth is an integral part of Army life. It is a time to reflect on the crucial role the Army played in the Emancipation Proclamation and ending segregation in the U.S.” But google that address today and you’ll find that message has been deleted.
Also deleted, according to Page, are “webpage memorials of Blacks, Latinos, and women who defended our country.”
This dovetails perfectly with restoring the names of confederate generals to military bases, men who tried to overthrow our government, and the dismissal of several Black generals. The dismissal of Black Army Chief of staff General Charles Brown, a former fighter pilot with an outstanding service record, was accompanied by language implying he was not appointed based on his ability and record, but because of his color.
If you Google the record of present Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, you’ll find quite the contrast with the outstanding service and character of General Brown.
