VFW unites to combat hunger campaign
To the editor:
Food insecurity is defined as a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active, healthy life. the VFW thinks this is completely unacceptable and we need your help supporting the “Uniting to Combat Hunger Campaign” to fight food insecurity and strike a knock-out blow against hunger for good.
This is a serious societal issue that may affect 1 in 8 Americans and 1 in 4 Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans. Food insecurity contributes to (1) Serious health complications, especially when people facing hunger are forced to choose between spending money for food and medicine or medical care. (2) Damage to a child’s ability to learn and grow. (3) Difficult decisions for seniors — often living on fixed incomes — such as choosing between paying for food and critical healthcare.
We invite you to join the “Uniting to Combat Hunger Campaign” by donating money or food to local food pantries. Your support can bring hope and relief to those struggling with hunger.
The VFW Foundation’s Uniting Hunger Campaign will grant a $1 match for every $1 raised and $1 for every pound of food donated. The grant money the VFW Auxiliary Post 3357 receives will be used to support our local veterans, their families, and local food banks.
Food baskets with our signs will be placed at the following local businesses in our area — Coakley’s, Kinney Drugs, Romano’s, Veterans Club, Walgreens, Saranac Lake Adult Center, Shamrock, Hex & Hop, Bitters and Bones, Cavu Cafe, American Legion Post 326 in Lake Placid, NBT Bank and the Tri-Lakes Federal Credit Union.
If you choose to donate money to a local food pantry, kindly let us know who you are, the amount of money donated, and the name of the food pantry so we can take advantage of the “$1 match for every $1 donated” from the grant to continue our work supporting our veterans. (contact — bjs3835@verizon.net) We hope you join us for this very important issue.
