Saranac Lake should consider repairing Main Street bricks

To the editor:

Last week you published a beautiful photo of the Troop B black horses going through their paces on Main Street, Saranac Lake, during Winter Carnival. One of the most notable and interesting things about the photo was the brick pavement.

I had no idea it was still there under a very thin layer of tarmac.

I encourage the town to consider uncovering and repairing the bricks on Main Street. Think what it would do to add to the (not inconsiderable) charm of the town. Even a very short stretch (from traffic light to traffic light) would be a great addition. I also think it would cause drivers to go more slowly.

Needless to say I have no idea of the wintertime upkeep of a brick pavement or its ability to stand up to modern traffic, but I would think that restoring the brick pavement might be cheaper than tearing it out and then putting down the asphalt pavement which also needs to be maintained after our tough winters.
