To the editor:

I was saddened today to see the obituary for Mary Lawthers in Saturday’s Enterprise. The obit did not have much to say about Mary’s time in Saranac Lake so I wanted to fill in my perspective.

I worked with Mary for several years when she was instrumental in getting the Ecumenical Council of Saranac Lake back in operation after a time of disservice. If it weren’t for Mary’s steadying influence, it would not have been successful. I always found her to be kind and always encouraging. I always knew that I could turn to her for Godly advice. She shepherded the process of obtaining our 501(c)(3) status. She was also instrumental in helping us establish Samaritan House, the transitional housing center for the homeless in our area. I was grateful for having know her.
