Thoughts on the village election

To the editor:

It is always interesting to me, to see the many endorsements in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise for candidates for local elections. Friends, family and acquaintances of the people running for office write letters of support in what I assume is an attempt to sway others to vote for their choice. I do not know if others are convinced to vote for a candidate based on a letter of endorsement in the newspaper, but I am suggesting that before casting a vote we all do our homework.

The Enterprise co-hosted a candidate forum on this past Tuesday. The synopsis of this forum was printed in the Enterprise on Thursday. I suggest that we should all read that article. If you have time, contact the candidates and see if you can sit and talk to them about your concerns. I do not know a politician that will not enjoy the opportunity talk.

The talking points and issues being addressed in the upcoming election are not new. Housing, STRs, crime and economic development and improvement have been the same issues for many years. Can the current candidates make positive social change or are they running to change the makeup of the board so they can get their agenda passed?

This election appears to be pitting new up and comers against experienced former elected officials. With experience comes some baggage. Mr. Paul Van Cott and Ms. Aurora White have many years of experience in local government, which is not without some controversy. They both have contributed to the community. Ms. Katie Stiles and Mr. Sean Ryan although younger have established their commitment to the community by working to solve problems and leading by example in their everyday work. I am suggesting that we look at the newcomers and decide on our own, if we want former politicians or new dedicated residents to help shape the community going forward.
