Ryan and Stiles for a brighter future

To the editor:

After attending both the Democratic and Republican caucus events, as well as the March 5 candidate forum, it is hard to get away from the fact that our young voters are nowhere to be found. This letter is for them, and anyone else who cares to read.

On March 19, village voters will cast their ballots to elect two new trustees. More importantly though, these voters will be taking part in a referendum to chart the path for the future of our community: Forward progress and new leadership, or a return to the divisiveness and dysfunction of a bygone administration.

It is no secret that change is most often met with opposition. Many times, this is because those who’ve been in power fear losing it. We can see this on a national scale, but it is just as true in our small towns and villages — Saranac Lake is certainly no exception. Change is difficult, uncomfortable, scary — and absolutely necessary.

The good news is this: In 2022, voters showed up in record numbers and overwhelmingly chose to cast their ballots for change. By electing two young trustees and a new mayor — all of whom made their commitment to change well known — voters clearly illustrated their collective desire to move forward and embrace a more positive shared future.

As long-time Trustees Rich Shapiro and Tom Catillaz step down, there is opportunity for continued change, further progress and a fresh, energetic young board. Now, the question is this: When we show up to cast our votes on March 19, do we continue ushering in this new generation of leadership? Do we continue to build on this wave of momentum and energy? Do we choose progress and a brighter future for Saranac Lake … or do we waver in the face of change and settle for more of the same-old-same-old?

As a young father and husband, a local business owner, a proud native and a proponent of our little mountain town, I will be voting to continue the push forward. I will be voting for Sean Ryan and KT Stiles, and I encourage all young voters to join me. You’ve got a voice; get out and use it.

Very sincerely,

Johnny Williams
