Safer crossings for the new rail trail

To the editor:

I am very glad that the rail trail is almost completed. It looks great and I am really looking forward to biking to Saranac Lake and Lake Placid from my home in Ray Brook.

At the Saranac Lake end, the rail trail crosses state Route 86 by the Oseetah trailhead parking. Visibility is good, but the highway is wide and the speed limit is 45 mph. At the Lake Placid end, the trail crosses Old Military Road. At the crossing, the speed limit is also 45 mph, but Old Military Road is steep and curving and many cars are going much faster than the speed limit. At both places, trail crossing signs have been posted but that doesn’t seem sufficient. The crossing should be marked with overhead flashing lights or a “crosswalk” button that trail users could push to activate flashing lights. Families with small children will be using the trail. Make it safer for them.
