Future impact of visits by young athletes is immeasurable

To the editor:

With the finale of the FISU World University Games Sunday in Lake Placid, more than 1,000 young athletes from around the globe will now head home and the debate will begin over whether this event created the economic impact that officials predicted.

All I can say is, one young woman from New York City–my late mother Joan Duffy (nee Scully)–made one visit during one winter in 1948 to spend time with her college roommate, Betty Broe, at the family’s farmhouse in Keene (which today is the Snow Goose Bed and Breakfast).

My mother was so enthralled with the Adirondacks after one visit that three generations of our family have returned year after year, with an emotional–and yes, economic–impact that could never be measured at the time.
