NIMBY tries to stop a good marina

To the editor:

In response to the article that appeared in today’s Enterprise regarding another delay for the Lower Saranac Marina, I say enough is enough.

As covered by this paper, the project was seeking to develop and rejuvenate an old, dilapidated, previously established marina on Lower Saranac Lake. The developers and Mr. Damp have spent seven years and a great deal of time and money doing studies and meeting the Adirondack Park Agency’s and Department of Environmental Conservation permit process stipulations, not to mention frivolous lawsuits filed by one or two “NIMBYs.” The marina is far more environmentally friendly than it was previously, and Mr. Damp has done an exemplary job in improving the shoreline and mitigating environmental impacts. Mr. Damp has invested money into the community. He has hired contractors, engineers and provided numerous jobs in a community at a time when they are needed badly. The governor and New York state encourages Adirondack communities to expand upon our recreation opportunities as a means to stimulate our hurting local economies. That’s exactly what this project is attempting to do.

Yet one person who has property across the lake is able to railroad this project and delay it in hopes that the developer will give up. The facts over the last seven years speak for themselves. This project is not going to have a negative impact on the environment. Conversely, it thus far has had a positive affect by rejuvenating shoreline and shallow waters. The people in this community need jobs and business investment. Not more NIMBYs!
