On day of 200,000th death, Trump says virus ‘affects virtually nobody’

To the editor:

Are we about to reelect as our president someone who time and time again lies so chronically he can contradict himself in a short string of sentences? More importantly, his moral bearings, be they what they may, are so loose he reveals his total lack of human compassion. Please let Isabel Wilkerson’s words contrast with his incoherent idiocy when you go to vote.

Donald Trump, at an Ohio rally on the day we commemorate 200,000 COVID-19 deaths:

“It affects elderly people, elderly people with heart problems and other problems. That’s what it really affects. In some states, thousands of people — nobody young. Below the age of 18, like, nobody. They have a strong immune system, who knows? Take your hat off to the young, because they have a hell of an immune system. But it affects virtually nobody. It’s an amazing thing. … By the way, open your schools, everybody, open your schools.”

Isabel Wilkerson’s conclusion of her seminal work, “Caste”

“The challenge of our era … is not merely the social construct of black and white but seeing through the many layers of a caste system that has more power than we should permit it to have. Even the most privileged of humans in the Western world will join a tragically disfavored class if they live long enough. They will belong to the last caste in the human cycle, that of old age, people who are among the most demeaned of all citizens in the Western world.”
