Concern for young women and girls

To the Editor:

I am past pregnancy now in my life, but having worked in health care and being female, I am concerned for our young women and girls.

I’ve been reading with interest the many letters on the new Center. As a former Administrator at NYU Medical Center, I truly take issue with the designation of “hospital.”

“Hospital, an institution that is built, staffed, and equipped for the diagnosis of disease; for the treatment, both medical and surgical, of the sick and the injured; and for their housing during this process. The modern hospital also often serves as a centre for investigation and for teaching.”

Is there an MD Medical Director? Do they have a license for medical billing? Can they prescribe medicine?

Please don’t compare this place to our other faith-based organizations like Samaritan House homeless shelter, Grace Pantry which provides diapers, toothpaste, toilet paper and other supplies, and it’s not like a dentist.

All women and girls over 13 should have an OB/GYN medical doctor. My biggest concern is this place is set up for deceptive practices. A woman’s body and health is hers. She should decide, with no manipulative guilt, how best to care for her own health.

I was young when abortion was illegal. Many women, including married women, died in motel rooms having used coat hangers to abort themselves. How many went to illegal abortionists? They were there. We knew it. Rich women went to Europe or South America for abortions. The Catholic Church ran unwed mother’s homes around the country where girls went, then gave up their babies. Many were scarred for life emotionally.

These “loving” options are what I would think are talking women into having a baby they may not want to have and using the ultrasound to guilt them into showing a heartbeat 6 weeks into a pregnancy.

Everyone can make their own decisions. I would never presume to tell anyone how to run their life. Like everything in life, educating oneself and making informed decisions is the best way forward. Do what is best for you. I’m not saying go or don’t go to this place. Just remember, your life is important. You are here, now. I am a person of faith too. But I don’t believe women are condemned for having an abortion. Respecting that a woman knows what she can handle or not handle physically or emotionally is personal.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Zahn
