Library helps grandparents, grandkids

Ken Youngblood reads to his 3-year-old granddaughter. (Photo provided)

To the editor:

No carousel, no Wild Center, no dancing to live music on the Berkeley Green, no children’s corner at Saranac Lake Free Library. What is a 3-year old to do?

Go online to the library’s pickup service, and ask the library’s dedicated staff to find the perfect book about animals that will hold a child’s attention and encourage her to read.

Did it work? Peggy Orman, the library’s youth programming coordinator, emails back with instructions for picking up a book. Papa admits he is getting tired after reading Eric Carle’s “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” to the little one five times last night and first thing in the morning, but by now the little one helps fill in the missing words.

Lots of love. Love for memories like this with a granddaughter, love for sitting beside Papa and sharing a book, a newly discovered love for books, and love for what Saranac Lake Free Library offers our community in the time of coronas.
