Lake Placid leaders don’t seem to get it yet

To the editor:

This letter was sent to members of the town and village boards.

Dear elected officials:

All of us have known each other for a long time. That’s why I’m sure you understand that we did not purchase a house in a neighborhood 24 years ago so that we could be surrounded by the bleakness of empty homes or the cacophony of rowdy parties. You guys have spent a lot of time on this, but I still don’t see how you are going to restore and protect our neighborhoods.

How are you going to ensure that a “host” is not someone’s nephew sleeping in the attic? How are you going to ensure that these “hotels” are not going to continue to spread?

How are you going to ensure that people will actually be able to live in Lake Placid in the future?

I know that this has been a hassle for you and that not all of you consider this to be as vital an issue as we do. However, you are now facing an energetic and organized block of voters. Don’t underestimate how much discontent we can muster up. Follow the land-use code. Be transparent during your deliberations. Show these carpetbaggers that Lake Placid is a community of residents, not just another investment opportunity.

Sincerely,

Karen Huttlinger
