Stefanik’s closed mind

To the editor:

Speaking to reporters on Oct. 10, Congresswoman Elise Stefanik declared her opposition to the impeachment of Donald Trump for his attempt to coerce foreign assistance in undermining U.S. elections. By then the U.S. House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence had deposed only a single witness in a hearing the congresswoman failed to attend. According to transcripts, by the end of the closed-door hearings. Rep. Stefanik had missed seven of 16 fact witnesses who appeared before her committee.

During the five days of public hearings, Congresswoman Stefanik’s attendance record improved to 100%. She used much of her time in the national spotlight to complain about her committee’s use of closed-door testimony, even as transcripts of those sessions were being released.

On a matter that strikes at the very heart of our democracy, Congresswoman Stefanik reached her conclusion without questioning a single witness. In doing so she turned her back on her oath to defend the Constitution of the United States. Voters in New York’s 21st District should be as concerned with Rep. Stefanik’s closed mind as she is about the Intelligence Committee’s closed doors.
