The future of the Affordable Care Act

To the editor:

Sally is an educated health care employee. She is aware of the impact the Affordable Care Act has had on her area’s population, having seen many new clients that never had the ability to be insured before. Sally is also aware of the reimbursement rates that her employer receives from ACA patients, insurance companies, and private payers.

Sally is concerned that if the ACA does not continue or loses significant members, her job may be in jeopardy, as well as her health care plan, as her employer needs that Medicaid reimbursement to stay open. Sally has a wealth of skills, yet mostly not transferable to another field. Her options for a new job are limited, and more so if she wishes to maintain her current income level.

This is true of other employees in her rural area. All of the industries and corporations are tied together around a central product component. There are other jobs, yet the uncertainty of their existence may also collapse if health care goes first. People in her community count on the health care offerings they now have-and are able to access. Without the ACA, more serious illness and a greater need will return-Sally knows, she has seen the change.

Sally is concerned as we all should be of the far reaching impact the dissolution of the ACA bears. We hope, along with Sally, that our representatives in Washington, D.C. making the decisions choose the ACA before the end result occurs. Pay attention, act accordingly – it could be your family next!
