Let them be heard

To the editor:

I passionately hold positions which I feel are for the betterment of this nation. I know there are a number of people in this community that have beliefs which are diametrically opposed to mine with the same degree of passion. In all forms of communication, we see vehement discussions and tempers flaring. Our frustration can become overwhelming. When we disagree and argue, we can become emotionally charged and unyielding in our debate, the other person/group stakes their claim, and we’re very upset at their failure to see we are right. Frankly, I’m OK with that (unless we take a swing at that person). In this nation, we have the freedom to express our opinion and try to convince people of the veracity of what we say, and want then to recognize their errors. They can feel the same way about us. This is who we are as a town, state or nation.

Yesterday, a person with a right-wing perspective of the world was not allowed to speak because of vociferous student protest and property destruction. The opposition to this man consisted of some, but not all, of the students. It is a shame this man was not able to speak. While many were upset by his presence, the greater harm was done by the suppression of his voice. We must allow the expression of views which may be completely onerous to ourselves; in preserving that person’s right to speak, we bolster our own right for unfettered expression.

So yes, I am angered that we are taking a different course from the one I strongly desire, and yes, I will continue to speak out and express myself and hope I/we prevail. But this must occur while all others also have their say. This is the hard work of freedom, of restraining ourselves from violence (verbal or physical) and allowing all voices to be heard.
