Derrick didn’t immediately condemn sexist comment

To the editor:

If there are any undecided voters in the North Country Congressional race, they should look no farther than the repeated issue of sexism from the Mike Derrick campaign.

Mike Derrick does not have the leadership abilities to control sexist name-calling at his own events. Mr. Derrick didn’t have the decency or courage to interject and tell a speaker that calling his seated congresswoman “Elsie the Cow” wasn’t welcome, that personal insults and misogynistic bullying weren’t things he wanted to represent or be a part of in his campaign. The fact is that Mike Derrick is quite clearly not a strong voice for women, as he let the crowd laugh and clap at the remark. Women across NY-21 should be made aware that Mike Derrick has no problem associating with good-old boys and bullies, and allowing his supporters to make openly misogynistic comments at his events.

Mike Derrick’s campaign and its associates say they would have done this or that had they known folks were watching. Mike Derrick is already learning how to be a career politician, i.e., to say one thing when voters are watching and another when they aren’t. In public he will play champion of women’s issues while in private he fails to condemn attacks on their appearance. In a statement, the speaker doubles down on his comments, saying he would have called her a “nice girl” and not said things if he knew he was being recorded. No real apology, only admitting to being sexist in private; this is blatant hypocrisy and so typical of liberal politicians.

We should also keep in mind that to vote for Mike Derrick is a vote for a lackluster candidate with no defined policy ideas and with supporters who are unapologetically and openly sexist. I’m voting for Elise Stefanik!
