Let’s roll on a bike trail in Tupper-Placid corridor

To the editor:

“Cycling tourism” in North America is a booming industry. Hundreds of industry professionals attended the National Bicycle Tourism Conference in San Diego last November. Their focus is on creating and developing bike-based tourism destinations. The Adirondacks should be participating in this growth, but we are sadly mired in analysis paralysis and community conflict. We have finally gotten a partial-corridor “go ahead” from the state of New York to lift the rails from Tupper Lake to Lake Placid. So let’s roll then!

We are second home owners in the Adirondacks, but we live full time along the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail in western Pennsylvania, which is part of a 335-mile trail from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. Thriving all along the route are B&Bs, restaurants, tour leaders, bicycle entrepreneurs and trip planners. It is an attraction that brings bikers from all over the world. It also entertains the local residents who live nearby. The Tupper-to-Lake Placid corridor is at least as beautiful and is sure to attract a similar demographic. So let’s roll then!
