Lake Placid needs events like Village Stroll

To the editor:

Congratulation to the Holiday Village Stroll organizers!

Judging from the activity on Main Street and at the Mirror Lake Inn, the Village Stroll appears to have been hugely successful for the community. It certainly was successful for the Mirror Lake Inn.

This type of event is exactly what should be replicated throughout the year under the leadership of the Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Business Association. These events have a significant off-season economic impact and, once created by us, belong to us forever – we own them. Events such as ECAC hockey are a boon for the community, and we work hard to get and keep them, but as soon as they have a better opportunity, they leave. We have no control.

With events like the Village Stroll, we have control, and we need to create more of them throughout the year. As we learned from the Village Stroll, they don’t have to happen at the time of the holiday – they can happen before. So why not an Easter-themed weekend prior to Easter or a Thanksgiving-themed weekend prior to Thanksgiving or a Halloween-themed weekend like Saratoga did? (There was no place to park, and one could barely walk down the street it was so crowded.)

Congratulations and thanks again to the individuals that made this viable weekend take place.

Sincerely,

Edwin H. Weibrecht Jr.
