Barrett strays from truth

To the editor:

I am the Essex County Republican Committee chairman. In a recent article (“Conservative primary this week for county judge” in Wednesday’s Enterprise), Brian Barrett was quoted as saying he was not allowed to appear before the Republican Committee. The truth is Mr. Barrett never contacted me, nor communicated to me any desire to appear before the county committee.

I have only spoken to him once, when I introduced myself to him at the Law Day dinner in Ticonderoga on May 1 of this year. In that face-to-face introduction, he did not say anything about a desire to address the Republicans. However, Mr. Barrett did talk to my first vice chairman in charge of committee candidate interviews (Win Belanger), and it was reported to me that he was contacted after Mr. Barrett was endorsed by the Democrats. Mr. Barrett asked Mr. Belanger if Mr. Belanger would personally back Mr. Barrett. Mr. Belanger informed Mr. Barrett he would not and that “it would not make sense for him to appear in front of our committee as an already endorsed Democrat.” He should have approached us first, not after.

Mr. Barrett seems to have a tenuous relationship with the truth – not a trait needed in jurisprudence.
