Revisiting struggles in Labor Gap

Since 2018, the Adirondack Daily Enterprise has focused on the local job market. The series of articles, which began more than three years ago, were dubbed the Labor Gap.

Today, as “Now hiring” signs pop up at shops, hotels and numerous other businesses, the Enterprise is again searching for answers. The first in a series of stories appears on Page 1.

It notes some surprising — and some obvious numbers. Despite the increase in tourism during these months, populations are struggling throughout the Adirondack Park.

Then, there is a larger issue of those who are not yet ready to return to work. There is a federal incentive being paid to those who have lost jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic while others are not just comfortable yet.

“It was tough before COVID and really tough now,” Bill Gomez, chief operating officer of Prestige Hospitality Group, told the Enterprise.

It is bad timing all around — especially for the tourism industry, which thrives during the summer months here. And, with the Fourth of July just around the corner, travelers are ready to get out and about after being stuck home during the pandemic.

There are no easy answers — and some frustration from those looking to fill positions. How will this dilemma pan out and is there reason for optimism in the future?

We hope this series brings a bit of answers.
