Moose club hosts picnic

The Enterprise, July 31, 1939

It was nice to see The Enterprise carry a story like the Moose picnic — people having fun, no politics … and the local news was more fun!

“More than 75 members of the Loyal Order of the Moose and the Women of the Moose and their friends attended the joint Moose picnic yesterday morning and afternoon at Fish Creek campsite.

“Various sports including swimming, boating, racing and games were enjoyed during the recreational program and prizes were awarded the winners of the games. Marion Cannon and Geraldine Kunath were the winners of the peanut hunt and the girl’s mile dash was taken by Miss Kunath. Burfield Pratt tied in the men’s mile dash, tied with Robert Lobdell and the potato race was won by Robert Hickok.

“The horseshoe pitching contest was won by Leon Bunker. Mrs. Belle Kirby, Mrs. Leona Kilroy and Mrs. Louis Fobare were awarded prizes at pinochle. Prizes were donated by the Army & Navy Store, King and Harry’s Barber shop, Joe Mullen’s store, Reis Pharmacy, B. D. Pruess store and the Hotel Saranac and Del’s Wine & Liquor Store.

“Members of both Orders of the Moose in charge of arrangements for the picnic were Mrs. Ella Mousseau, Mrs. Belle Kirby, Mrs. Pearl Cole, Mrs. Hazel Currier, Walter Mousseau, Joseph LeClair and Perly Ebare.”

The K of C Soft Ball Champs

“Behind the adept twirling of Paul Stephen, the single men’s team overcame the married men’s team 6 to 5 in the soft ball game which was the feature attraction of the Knights of Columbus picnic yesterday afternoon at Alex Grove…[later Sparky’s, located at the intersection of Route 3 and the Loon Lake Road.] “The picnic was held in honor of Timothy J. O’Hara, retiring Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and was attended by more than 100 persons. The picnic was a stag affair … [to the uninitiated, no women allowed.] “Lunch which was prepared by Bernard Carlin was served at 1 o’clock and was followed by the soft ball games and other sports. Police Chief James Coughlin out-classed all others for horseshoe pitching.

“The committee in charge of arrangements for the picnic were Thomas Howard, Paul Stephen, Jams Procopio, Bernard Carlin and N. P. Delisle who also pitched for the married men’s softball team.”

Golf winners in putting

“Mrs. Margaret Haddock and Andrew Callanan were awarded first prizes in the Ladies’ and Men’s putting tournament held last evening as part of the Sunday program at the Saranac Lake Golf Club. They carded a net score of 34 and 33 respectively.

“The second prize for ladies was won by Mrs. R. A. Tyrell who netted a 35 and F. Ferris Hewitt, Eugene Christian and Gordon Partridge split the second prize for men with a three-way tie of 34.

“In the morning the newly formed beginners class under the direction of Hike Tyrell, club pro, was attended by six men and Edmund Guggenheim chairmen of the green’s committee.”

Scholarship for Bradley Sageman

“C. Bradley Sageman of 32 Park Ave. is the Franklin County student who has been awarded the state tuition-paying scholarship at Cornell University as a result of the competitive examination held June 19-23. The announcement was made today by the New York State Education Department.

Later, Dr. Bradley Sageman Harvard graduate, respected Saranac Lake surgeon and Saranac Lake High School valedictorian in the Class of 1938.”

“Hoist by your own petard”

“Fred Ogden of Binghamton was treated at the General Hospital here yesterday afternoon for a wound caused when a fish hook caught in one ear. He was discharged at once from the hospital after treatment.”

Wins skeet shoot at fish & game

“Activity at the Fish and Game Club grounds on the Bloomingdale road was enlivened yesterday afternoon as eight marksmen engaged in a skeet shoot which was won by Frank Reynolds.

“Reynolds, using a 12-guage gun, shot two rounds of 25 and 24 to take first place. Ralph Hutchins was second with 24. Robert Bogie favored a .410 shotgun and shot rounds of 22 and 21.

“The feminine contingent was represented by Mrs. Robert Bogie, also using a .410 gun. Mrs. Bogie shot two rounds of 15 each. Wednesday evening the usual mid-week shoot will be held at 7 o’clock.”

Bloomingdale news

“Mrs. Richard Wooten and daughter, Dorothy of Champlain were overnight guests Saturday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sanford Hayes. Richard Wooten, Jr., who has spent the last week with his grandparents will return and Dorothy will remain a week.

“Mr. and Mrs. Ed Cannon and daughter, Marion, of North Creek have moved into the Smith house on School Street corner.

“Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Cassin and son, Dennis, returned to their home at Evanston, Ill., after spending 4 weeks at the Cassin Cottage.”

Note: The gremlins somehow got into last week’s column and slashed this last paragraph from my stunning story on the opening of the new Bloomingdale School: “School Board members were upset at the increase in the price of fuel oil when opening the only bid received, which was from the LaPan Oil Company. The price had jumped from 13.6 cents a gallon to 15 cents.”

Starting at $3.92/week.
