Enterprise classified was king

A full page of ads, July 16, 1926

It is hard to imagine, filling a page, even looking at the great variety of ads.

Such as – “Wanted – Refined, young white girl to do housework and take care of 5-year-old baby. Five room bungalow. Two People. To sleep at bungalow. Wages $10. [does not indicate per week or per month] Phone 1027-W.”

Or, how about – “For Sale – Lake Frontage, 50 ft. shore, Riverside Drive, with building 22 x 48, $3,000. Also building lot 50×100, near Lower Saranac Lake, $400. W. E. Colyer, 18 St. Bernard. Phone 232.”

Now remember, no local radio station, that didn’t happen until the next year, 1927. So not much of any outlet for advertising. That is also why circulation was boosted by more than 20 newsboys delivering to almost every household in town — lots of people would be reading your ad.

There were five ads under the heading — HAIRDRESSING — The Mary Elizabeth Beauty ‘Shoppe’ in the Berkeley Hotel — The Marinello Beauty Shop — Facial and Scalp Treatments with Electricity — MME. Perreault’s Beauty Parlor 64 Main — The Eileen Shop in the Potter Block — Betty’s Rouge Box at Pasho’s Barber Shop, 33 Main Street.

I liked the Eleanor Beauty Shoppe the best, located at 72 Broadway. “Shampooing , Scalp Treatments, Marcelling, Water Waving, Round Curling, Manicuring, Hair Dressing, Eye Brow Arching, Scientific Facial Massage, Acne Treatments, Hair Dying, Tinting”. [Sort of surprised there isn’t a Hesseltine girl in that prestigious lineup.]

FOR RENT — Four rooms, bath, heated with hot water supply, $35 per month, 23 Lake Flower Avenue. C. Sporck, phone 338 0r 594-M.

Or — Have several first-class apartments, $30 per month and up. D. J. Hayes, Real Estate, Insurance, Employment Office, 91 Broadway.

FOR SALE – Lot No. 2 on Glenwood Estates has a wonderful view. It faces South and has a 230-foot frontage on Wayotah Road. It contains ‘86.100’ acres of land and can be purchased on easy payments for $3,250. See George LaPan, or any Real Estate Agent.

FOR SALE — A COW. Just freshened. [meaning she just had a calf] Tuberculin tested, extra milker. Inquire George B. Riley, Gabriels, N.Y.

FOUR COWS FOR SALE — have been tested and retested. Apply to Mrs. Alice Anderson, Riverview. N.Y.
