Well, let’s see. Maybe we should begin with an Enterprise story of Nov. 2, 1956 about the Lake Placid Chamber getting a big raise.
“An expanded state and international advertising program and an increase in North Elba contribution for the Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce (I still love the title LP C of C) were highlights among election of five new directors, at the annual meeting last evening.
“Luke Patnode, Executive Secretary of the Chamber, explaining the annual report, said that 1956 income was at $30,098.95, and expenditures totaled $30,062.15, but indicated that the Chamber actually came out with no surplus to begin the next fiscal year, mainly due to an expanded 1956 advertising program.
“Mr. Patnode informed the board meeting attended by about 40 members out of a total of 450, that the Town of North Elba appropriation for 1957 had been increased to $16,500 from $12,500, with the increase going mainly into expanded advertising for a new snow reporting service over four radio stations. The Village contribution will be about $2,700 in 1957. The 1957 budget of about $24,000 (? that is what the story said) will also be made up of $5,000 from memberships and $500 from fund raising events.
“Elected to serve on the Chamber Board of Directors for a three-year term were S. Herman Macy of the Lake Placid Club, Roland Urfirer, Mrs. Dorothy Perkins, Dave Jones and Roy Allen.”

Skiing in Tupper Lake
–
“About 80 members of the Tupper Lake Lions Club and the Tupper Lake Rotary with their guests were on hand last night to hear Otto Schneibs, St. Lawrence University ski coach address the group on Mt. Morris as a possible ski center.
“Mr. Schneibs told the group that, ‘We have the snow, we have the mountain and we have the facilities. But do we use it, no. You have a beautiful spot in Mt. Morris. In our survey and observations of the mountain we have studies the ground exposure from all sides and snow reports as received by the ranger, and we have made an honest and true report. It’s your baby from here on in.’
“But Mr. Schneibs said, due to lack of height, Mt. Morris ‘can never be considered as a State ski center.’ However he urged local residents to develop the mountain into a ski center and a summer attraction.”
