Democrats gear up for village election

There was a lot going on 51 years ago, with the village elections coming up; the Adirondack Park Agency (established in 1971) heading for Albany to defend complaints regarding the agency; and a 12-county organizational meeting of local officials was scheduled with “concerns” about the APA’s Private Land Use Plan.

There was also a long, boring story on page one by Howard Riley about a free breakfast program for students funded by the state and federal governments that took up most of the school board meeting that went on until 11 p.m.

I cannot imagine why the editor ever put the story on page one. Oh, ah, ahem, sorry, I guess the editor was me.

Democrats ready to caucus

“Village Democratic chairman Frank Ratigan announced today that three persons had made it known to him that they will seek nominations for village office at the democratic caucus to be held Thursday night at 7:30 in the Harrietstown Town Hall.

“Tim Jock will seek the nomination for Mayor. Mr. Jock, 23, is a graduate of North Country Community College and is delicatessen manager at the Grand Union. He is married and the father of one child. He is activities director of the Cub Scouts, worked with the ’73 Winter Carnival Parade Committee and is a member of the Army Reserve.

“William Scheefer, III 26, is again seeking the nomination for trustee. Mr. Scheefer ran unsuccessfully for office last year. He is married with one child. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War and is employed as a physical therapist at the Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid.

“Mary Steuer, 27, will seek the other trustee post. She is married, the mother of two children and was a teacher until the children were born. She is a graduate of the College of St. Rose in Albany and has master’s degree in special science from the State University in Albany.

“Mr. Ratigan said he expected that there will be others seeking the nomination. Present Democratic trustee Jack Sweeney will be probably seeking the nomination, but Mr. Ratigan said he has made no formal announcement at this time.”

Okay, here’s the deal — Jack Sweeney was re-elected trustee and Mary Steuer won the other trustee post. Tim lost but later served a term as trustee and was elected mayor in 1979 and serving until 1986. He was elected mayor again in the 1990s. Tom Catillaz was elected mayor following Tim’s term.

APA holds open session

“The Adirondack Park Agency will ‘take care of the complaints’ of some North Country residents about future use of their property as it revises its land use plan.

“Chairman Richard Lawrence of Elizabethtown promised the changes Tuesday, as the agency held its first open meeting in two years.

“The Agency’s final draft of the master plan will state clearly that a home owner can rebuild his house if it is destroyed by fire and can leave his land to his children for them to divide up and build on, he said.

“Those two points were frequently cited in objections to the preliminary draft of the plan, which places controls on new building and on subdivision of private lands in the Adirondack Park.

“Tuesday’s agency meeting was opened up as an ‘informational session’ for the press after Assemblyman Glen Harris, R-Canada Lake, a critic of the agency’s plan, asked that all meetings be open to the public. [The Open Meetings Law was not passed until 1976.] “The agency turned down that request but did open up one working session dealing with the relatively non-controversial subjects in an effort to show that it is giving serious consideration to all the objections filed against the plan.

“Some 800 requests for changes in the map which classifies all of the land in six different zoning categories have been filed by local governments, groups and individuals. The agency reviewed and approved about 150 changes Tuesday.”

Association of county governments

“A meeting of the 12-county organization concerned with the Adirondack Park Agency Land Use Plan met Friday at the Harrietstown Town Hall.

“David B. Vanderwalker, [a former state trooper], Franklin County legislative chairman, was elected permanent chairman of the organization which has been named the Association of Adirondack County Government.

“Mr. Vanderwalker appointed a finance committee; Frank Moore of Washington County, chairman; Richard Purdue of Hamilton County, Roy McGee of Clinton County, and Peter Kaulfuss of Fulton County.

“The organization will ask for an audience with State Legislative leaders to present its views, and offer support for the Harris-Stafford bill.”

Big Tupper receipts down

“Edgar Fletcher, manager of Big Tupper Ski Center reported at a meeting of the Altamont Town Board that receipts for the month of January were down. Receipts at the Ski Center were Daily tickets, $11,554.25; Season tickets, $941.00; School tickets, $1,172.50; Locker rental $34.00; Ski Shop $500 and Cafeteria, $397.77. There were a total of 7,162 skiers during the month.

“Fletcher said that during the month there were three very poor weekends due to rain and warm weather.

“At this time a year ago the receipts for the Ski Center were $22,020.22 with 9,919 skiers using the slope.”

NCCC women beat ACC

“The North Country Community College basketball team went for a four straight record last night. A very tightly fought game brought the Saints to a 22-21 victory over the Adirondack Community College. This is the first Women’s Basketball team to beat Adirondack in the history of the college.

“Donna Hackett was high scorer for NCCC with 11 points. Coach Chris Hansen announced the next game to be played February 22 when the girls meet Clinton County Community College at St. Pius gym with game time starting at 6:00.”

Big loss for Redskins

“Last night the Saranac Lake Redskins traveled to Ogdensburg coming home with a 78-46 loss against the Blue Devils.

“High scorer for the evening was Joe Segriff with 9 points and Mike Ryan [no, not THAT Mike Ryan] followed with 8. The Redskins got off to a bad start last night due to a lack of outside shooting and loss of rebounds. Out of 17 foul shots the Redskins cleared only 6.

“Others on the team were Mike Loso, Jim Mckillip Craig Wright, Ken Lawrence, Kevin Seymour, Steve Trudell, Joe Stunzi, Derek Ewan and big Stan McGrain.”
