Winter Carnival review

The theme for the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival of 2024 is “Creepy Carnival.”

I just can’t wait to see what the citizens of our home town will come up with as they let their imaginations run wild and creepy.

It looks like there was no theme in 1969, but, “This 1969 commemorative program is dedicated to the past and present Winter Carnival Committees whose devotion to the village has been a landmark of cooperation since the 1800s.”

The 1969 Rotary Club presented their Variety Show and the Coronation of the King and Queen at the beautiful Pontiac Theater.

King was Milt Kamen, who at that time was a popular and well-known comedian, appearing often on the Johnny Carson show, and Queen was Patricia Burmeister, Miss New York State of 1968.

There was a skit during the Rotary Show entitled simply “Old School” and “New School.” Of course, Saranac Lake High was the old and Pius X High was the new. So here is who performed the skit …

Old School: Vanessa Burt, Dave Swett, Don Amell, Yvonne Ely, James Bristol, Gail Manning, Joan VanCour, Patti Thompson, Debbie Willette, Ronald Kunath, Robert Franklin and Mary Bevilacqua.

New School: Jill Stearns, Jo Zerbe, Kevin Eler, Paul Fuller, Fran Cantwell, James Ratigan, Luanne McGrain, Hedi Verheydt, Ron Lawrence, Steve Sweeney, Peggy McKillip and James Reichhart.

Next on the program were the Singing Nuns from Tupper Lake: Maureen Magher, Elaine Reandeau, Susan Corneau, Jeanne Reandeau — The accompanist was Alice Reandeau and the director was Judith DeForest. The numbers were all from “The Sound of Music.”

If you have looked at and read this far into the column, you may have guessed that it is all names and photos.

Attendant to the King: Paul Duncan. Attendant to the Queen: Muriel Primeau

Gentlemen of the Court: Bradley Sageman, Michael Toohey, Thomas Clark, Sheridan Swinyer and Michael Munn.

Ladies in Waiting: Karen Sayles, Carol Gauthier, Patricia Morgan, Dawn Dixon, Jeanne Ryan and Debbie Bedore.

Crown Bearers were Michael Stiles and Patty Howard.

Train Bearers were Steven LaPan, Philip Milne, Darlene Muncil and Lisa Ross.

The Coronation Committee: Anita Savoca, Ruth Roscoe, Vicki Aagesen, Susan Dyer and Cora Lee North.

The Carnival Committee: Gerry Primeau and Joseph Reilly, Co-Chairman (Joe was also President of the Chamber of Commerce), Dick Childs, Al Cheress, Vivian Duprey, Gene Keough, Anita Savoca, Lee Haig, Kathy Fobare and Doug Brayshaw.

Along with many other events, here is a piece of the carnival schedule in addition to the Parade, the Rotary Show and the Crowning of the King and Queen: Snowshoe races, Snowmobile event, Ice Soccer, Snow sculpture, Skydivers, Pee Wee Hockey barrel jumping, Parent-Teachers Association Skating Races, Ice Gold, Sno-Slide Canoe Race, Golden Ski Races, Fire Works on Saturday and Sunday and the popular Coronation Ball sponsored by the Women’s Civic Chamber held at the Harrietstown Town Hall.

Starting at $19.00/week.
