The Mountain Mirror — Chapter III

(Lake Placid, Saturday, Sept. 7, 1895)

Advertising in the Sept. 7, 1895 paper.

Well, dear readers of this incredible, detailed wonderful historic weekly column; judging from the response from the last two issues taken from a 1895 weekly Lake Placid newspaper, you love the stories as much as I do.

The advertising is as interesting as the stories… unfortunately, no addresses in the ads.

How about that Philip DeLoria’s big ad which we ran last week. BLACKSMITH, special attention to HORSESHOEING. But then underneath that, he obviously was expanding his business which didn’t have much to do with shoeing horses …

“UNDERTAKING — I have recently added to my business a new Hearse, stock of Coffins, Caskets, and Undertaker Goods [apparently his horse shoeing goods did not have much use in the Undertaking business] and am prepared to do such work at reasonable prices.”

So, this week as I scour those old pages for bits of news, local and national, I may be running more advertising than news copy.

More on the school district

“Work on the school building is progressing rapidly and we hope the taxpayers of School District No. 2 will come out in force and vote to make our district school a Union Free School. Any extra expense incurred by Lake Placid will take rank with our sister villages in having a Union Free School District, Saranac Lake, Elizabethtown and Wilmington.”

Snarky relationship with Chateaugay?

“It is stated that snow fell at Lake Placid Thursday to a depth sufficient to enable the boys to coast in the village for an hour or more – The Chateaugay Record.

“No doubt it rained at Chateaugay Thursday last and afforded the Chateaugay boys a few hours of rowing in the streets and enough water to enable them to take their annual bath.”

Famous preacher in Lake Placid

“Rev. John E. Bushnell, D.D. of New York City will preach in the Baptist Church next Sunday morning in place of Dr. Spinning. Dr. Bushnell is always heard by us with delight.

“Our friends from aboard have responded generously to our call on the parsonage fund.

We ask those of our resident population who wish to aid in this good work to lend a hand just now as the payment on the water works will be due soon.”

Nuisances in North Elba?

“Complaints have been made to the Town of North Elba officials that nuisances detrimental to the public health in the Village of Lake Placid, Newman and vicinity exist and said Board has notified the parties to abate the nuisances; parties notified should act at once.” [Geeze, I hope it doesn’t have anything to do with those tires piled at the Strack Garage; Jay and Jerry just won an award and their picture in The Enterprise for selling those tires … oops, sorry, I forgot, this was 1895.]

Honored at funeral

“A number of the Knights of DeSota Commandery attended the funeral of the late Samuel Sherman at Saranac on Wednesday, August 21. Mr. Sherman was a brother of the late Mrs. Lucy A. Fletcher of Lake Placid, and uncle of the Stevens Brothers of the Stevens House in Lake Placid.”
