Syracuse serious with traffic violations near schools

Drivers in Syracuse will soon face $50 fines for violating school speed limits and running red lights as the city rolls out new traffic cameras. According to a recent article in the Syracuse Post Standard, the city plans to have the cameras installed where school speed limits are in effect.

Drivers face a $50 fine for each violation. When Albany put in similar speed cameras in school speed limits last year, it issued more than 13,000 tickets in the first 11 days of the program, according to News 10 ABC in Albany. In six months, the city issued tickets totaling $3.24 million.

If Syracuse gives out the same number of tickets in the first 11 days, they would collect around $650,000.

Syracuse plans to utilize the maximum number of camera locations in New York state, including 36 red-light cameras and 34 speed cameras within city limits. The city plans to locate the red-light cameras as close as possible to school grounds. Each violation would result in a $50 civil fine to the registered owner of the vehicle, similar to a parking ticket, but it would not result in points added to anyone’s license. A $25 late penalty will be added for unpaid tickets.

Syracuse is already using cameras on school buses to catch drivers who illegally pass when the buses’ red lights are flashing and the stop arms are extended. Now the city is adding two more ways to crack down on dangerous driving near schools: red-light cameras and speed cameras in school speed limit areas.

Speed cameras in school areas would operate only during school hours, whereas red light cameras would operate at all times. The goal, officials said, is to reduce speeding and reckless driving near schools and improve pedestrian safety.

The city will get 65% of the fines while 35% will go to the private technology company, Jenoptik, which is installing the cameras.

Starting at $3.92/week.
