What it’s like to be a kid in the summertime

Review: “Back to the Lake” by Tommy Rockhurst

Tommy Rockhurst, a first-time author from Queensbury, has something to say about summers spent on Lake George.

Rockhurst’s characters in “Back to the Lake” do all the things kids love to do and adults love to remember doing in the summer when they were kids. They swim, fish, hike, and camp with friends and family. They splash in the lake and practice diving; they reluctantly agree to wear sunscreen; they play mini-putt golf and remember sinking tricky shots; they keep busy watching movies inside when the weather is bad outside, and they devour enormous ice cream cones with sprinkles and cherries on top.

The illustrations are drawn in an old-timey style which fits the idea of re-visiting childhood memories, but the diversity of characters is refreshing. Jana de Camilla, in the Post-Star daily newspaper in Glens Falls, describes the book as appropriate for ages 3-8, but the reading level seems more appropriate for ages 5-8. My very verbal 3-year-old granddaughter needed words like regal, fiercest, triumph, prized, weary and shenanigans defined, which made the story less riveting for her; however, she pored over the illustrations and was able to “read” the story through the pictures.

At the end of the book, there are two “Draw your own lake memories” pages and some blank ones. My little one really enjoyed filling those pages with her creations. She said, “Look, Mom. This is a book I’m allowed to draw in!”

If you want to pick up a copy for your children or grandchildren, “Back to the Lake” is available on amazon.com, barnesandnobles.com, and local book stores.
