Image of the Week
This photograph was taken almost 96 years ago, on Dec. 29, 1929. This Travel-Aire plane was lent to the Syracuse branch of the Curtiss-Wright Flying Service to provide 12 weeks of sightseeing services in Lake Placid. The plane was about to take off from Lake Flower to head back to Lake Placid when the nose sunk through the ice. The three passengers, pilot and mechanic were drenched but safely made it off the plane. All five were taken to the Elks Club to warm up and change into dry clothes. A week prior to the accident, the plane had made a record trip from New York City to Lake Placid in just two hours and 15 minutes. (Photo provided — Historic Saranac Lake Collection, 2024.2.62.
