For the 27th year, Saranac Lake has been hosting its Third Thursday ArtWalks, making it a must-see summer tradition. Each year, the event takes on a life of its own, with now 60-75 creative contributors, galleries and studios opening their doors, while other artists take to the streets.

With summer steamrolling by, there are only two opportunities left to meet and greet local artists and musicians: Aug. 21 and Sept. 18. This week, there is a special treat: the ArtWalk also coincides with the Adirondack Plein Air Festival. Not only will you have the chance to browse art, but ArtWalk guests will also have the opportunity to see artists painting at various locations.

Art and music may seem like a privilege, but in reality, the visual, literary and performing arts play a vital role in society.

Numerous reports and organizations continue to promote the importance of art to young children, which fosters imaginative associations through analytical thinking. One report from the nonprofit organization Arts Education Partnership outlines the building blocks that art and music provide to children from birth to age eight in its report, “Young Children and the Arts: Making Creative Connections.” It states that early exposure to the arts encourages children to use their senses, curiosity and imagination.

Exposure to the literary arts reinforces early language development, fine motor skills, problem-solving and critical thinking. The performing arts can enhance eye-hand coordination, confidence, public speaking skills and creativity. The visual arts promote emotional development, problem-solving skills and fine motor skills. (I’m just highlighting a few key points. There isn’t room to list all the benefits.)

Keep in mind, research studies aren’t just for children. Exposure to the creative arts also offers adults a range of benefits, including reduced stress and anxiety, improved memory and stronger community connections.

The Third Thursday ArtWalks takes place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Main Street and Broadway, with maps available at local venues on the day of the event. Not everyone will like the same music and art, but we can explore all the various creative works. As Andy Warhol said, “Everything has its beauty, but not everyone sees it.” Enjoy!

Starting at $3.92/week.
