Enjoy evening winter activities

There are many ways to enjoy winter, nature and the snow. During the day, it’s easy to recreate. There are limited opportunities to enjoy an outdoor winter experience unless you have the equipment and expertise to trek at night. Yes, anyone can go outside and play in the snow, but sometimes it’s nice to have a structured activity. Here are a few of my favorite ways to enjoy this endless winter, and not one activity involves shoveling a path or roof.

Mount Pisgah in Saranac Lake has night skiing Tuesday-Friday. Please check their website or Facebook page for regular hours of operation. Owned and operated by the village of Saranac Lake, Mount Pisgah Recreation Center has 15 skiable alpine acres, a beautiful lodge with a fireplace and food service. As with any winter activity, hours are weather dependent. There is a tubing hill as well, but current hours of operation are unavailable.

Titus Mountain, Malone, offers weekend evening alpine skiing and a lighted tubing hill on Fridays and Saturdays. Titus has 15 lighted trails, two terrain parks and an upgraded tubing hill. The Lower Lodge has three fireplaces, a bar, and a restaurant.

Saranac Lake’s Dewey Mountain has groomed and ungroomed XC ski/snowshoe trails. Most of the lower trails have lights for night skiing. Look for special events like the popular Friday Night Ski Jam, which offers food, skiing and live music. The ADK Cascade Welcome Center also offers monthly full moon XC ski options.

Ice skating is one of my favorite activities. Most towns around the Adirondacks offer night skiing for residents and visitors at their outdoor maintained rinks. Public skating is also available at the Lake Placid James C. Sheffield Speed Skating Oval. Public skating times vary. As always, please check individual websites for times and changes due to weather. I love skating at night. It was one of the best activities to get the last of my children’s wiggles out while allowing me to enjoy the beauty of skating outside and under the lights.

Saranac Lake’s Ice Palace remains open as long as the weather keeps it intact and safe. Hidden and themed carved objects are within and around the incredible ice block structure.

Lastly, this is the final week to see The Wild Center’s Wild Lights. The Wild Lights is open every evening this week, until Feb. 22. Thousands of meticulously placed lights illuminate the looped trail. The Forest Music soundtrack blends music with the surrounding nature sounds through 24 speakers placed throughout the trail.

With any activity, please check each individual website for updated times and events, as the Adirondack weather changes constantly. Enjoy the winter!

Starting at $4.75/week.
