Image of the Week

World TB Day is coming up on Sunday, so we’re focusing on tuberculosis history all week long. This photograph shows our home at the Saranac Laboratory in its infancy, sometime before 1911. The Saranac Laboratory was built for Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau in 1894; it was the first laboratory in the country devoted to the study of tuberculosis. The additions on the left side of the building were added in the 1920s to create more workspace and a library. This photograph was taken by a tuberculosis patient, Fletcher McCullough Durbin. Stay tuned to learn more about Saranac Lake’s important tuberculosis history! (Photo provided — Historic Saranac Lake Collection, 2020.2.84. Gift of John and Cece Durbin.)
