Fireworks, pets and people

I like fireworks. I know everything bad about them, but for some reason, I can overlook the noise, pollution and danger for a glimpse of the evening sky sparkle. I am not here to convince anyone to enjoy fireworks. I’m here to remind people that not everyone is on the same team.

I lived next door to a man who would get a firework display from South Carolina. He planned with great care where he (illegally at the time) planned to shoot off the rockets. He made a point to stop at every neighboring house and beyond to ensure everyone could prepare for the noise. He didn’t ask permission, but he did want people to understand. The point was that he maintained a line of communication. After the first year, we knew he would bring in the heavy Fourth of July artillery. With a baby and dog, we could either imagine things were going to be different or make a plan.

Independence Day, New Year’s Eve and other firework-designated days are a nightmare for some families. Children with sensory issues may require noise-canceling headphones or earplugs. Parents may be ill-prepared for the ramifications if a neighbor decides to start shooting off fireworks. Being notified in advance does allow families to make plans that don’t involve frightened children.

Pets are also a concern during these preplanned events. Once, my dog was in our fenced yard, and a shot went off nearby. She was so scared that she went through the fence, into the road, and ended up near the Bloomingdale Bog. It took a village to track her down. Thankfully she got safely home.

During these expected loud events, we made sure our dog was in a quiet section of our house. We turned on the music or the TV. We even built a temporary structure around her pet so she felt safe.

Not everyone will enjoy fireworks displays. They may stay home to avoid the crowds and noise. Bringing the fireworks to them without their knowledge doesn’t seem right. We all know some Independence Day celebrations can continue well past July 4. Let’s make sure everyone can enjoy the festivities! Stay safe.
