William Brainerd

William F. Brainerd, 66, of Cambridge, passed away at his residence on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2025.

Born in Sodus Point and raised in Ray Brook, he graduated from Saranac Lake High School before attending Fordham University. He spent many years working in the family business, Arctic Cream in Ray Brook, where he developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for the community he served. After a devastating fire in 1971, William took great pride in helping rebuild the business that was not only important for his family but a beloved icon of the Adirondacks. Throughout his career, he also worked with various floor covering companies in New Jersey and New York State. For the past 10 years, he was a valued member of ProSource of Albany, where he was well-respected for his dedication and professionalism.

William found joy in the natural beauty of the Adirondacks, spending many hours outdoors in the region he loved. His appreciation for the outdoors was a defining part of his life and reflected his warm, steady and thoughtful nature.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Melanie Douglas Brainerd, whom he married on June 8, 1985. William also leaves behind his three children: Nicholas Brainerd of Saranac Lake; Lyndsey Brainerd and Shannon Brainerd, both of Saratoga Springs. He is also survived by his sister, Susan DeWein of Mechanicville and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, William F. and Elizabeth Ann (Cornwell) Brainerd and a sister, Kim Brainerd.

Funeral services will be held privately.

Arrangements are in the care of the Ackley, Ross & Gariepy Funeral Home in Cambridge.
