Frederick J. Monette Sr.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Frederick J. Monette Sr., affectionately known as “MadDog.” Fred passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 2, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born on July 28, 1948, in Mineville, New York, to Leonard and Mary Monette, Fred lived a life of purpose, hard work and unwavering dedication to his family and community. Though he left formal schooling early to begin working, he later earned his GED — a true testament to his determination and self-reliance.

Fred proudly served in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1971, demonstrating profound bravery and patriotism. Following his honorable discharge, he embarked on a long and distinguished career with New York state, serving in various institutions until his retirement in 2003.

Retirement, for Fred, was not about slowing down. He became a full-time caregiver for his beloved granddaughter and devoted time to his passion for mechanics. With a knack for fixing anything and a love for classic cars and racing, Fred brought boundless energy to every project.

He was also a committed bowler and long-time member of a local bowling league, only stepping away when his illness made it too difficult to continue. Beyond his hobbies, Fred was known for his genuine spirit — always ready with a helping hand, a kind word or a heartfelt conversation. He was a true pillar of his community.

Fred found joy in life’s simple pleasures: spending time with family, fishing and walking his dog. His spirit of generosity and strength left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Fred was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Johnny Monette.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Debbie Monette, and his children: Frederick Monette Jr. (Marie), Wilfred Monette (Danielle), Sarah LaFave (Shawna) and Brenda Brown (Joshua).

He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Brenan Strack, Baliegh Strack, Bella Herr, Matthew Monette, MaKayla Monette, Dylan Monette, Mia Monette, Mackenzie Monette and Jerry Monette; and great-grandchildren: Amani Amell, Mila Amell, Nile Kennedy, Bekett Strack, and Paisley Monette.

Fred’s legacy of love, courage and perseverance lives on in those who loved him. His memory will remain a source of comfort and inspiration.

May he rest in peace.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Frary Funeral Home, 24 Cliff Ave., Tupper Lake. At Fred’s request, there will be no calling hours. A Christian burial service will take place on July 28, (Fred’s birthday) at 11 a.m. in St. Alphonsus Cemetery with Reverend Severinus Torwoe officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to any veterans’ association or hospice organization — both were deeply meaningful in Fred’s life and final days. Family and friends wishing to remember Frederick “MadDog” Monette may share a memory, send a condolence or sign the online guestbook at www.fraryfuneralhome.com.
